A Historic Grist Mill-Turned-Art House

Cross Mill Arts Center is located on Kings Pond in Ashland Virginia along Independence Road where a historic grain mill once operated as part of the region’s early economy. In the 1960s the property was transformed into a center for the arts and continues to serve that purpose today.

Cross Mill Arts Center serves as a creative retreat and gathering place for artists, musicians, and the broader community. Through singer-songwriter performances, visual art exhibitions, small-scale events, and private retreats, the Mill continues to foster meaningful creative exchange. Looking ahead, the vision includes artist residencies, songwriting retreats, educational workshops, and expanded opportunities for regional artists to create and share their work.

In the 1960s, Jack and Nancy Witt transformed the mill from an industrial structure into a living, breathing center for the arts—part home, part working studio, and part community gathering space.

For decades, the Cross Mill operated as a place where art was not only created but shared—through exhibitions, gatherings, and an open exchange of ideas. In 2024, the decision was made to pass the stewardship to its next chapter that is Cross Mill Arts Center.

The current vision for Cross Mill is not to reinvent the space, but to continue its natural evolution. It remains intentionally unpolished in spirit—rooted in authenticity, creativity, and human connection. The goal is to preserve the character of the Mill while opening its doors to new voices and experiences.
