Cross Mill Arts Center is located on Kings Pond in Ashland, Virginia, along Independence Road, where a historic grain mill once stood as a working part of the region’s early economy. For nearly two centuries, the site served as a functional mill before entering a new chapter in the 1960s, when it was acquired by artists Jack and Nancy Witt.
The Witts thoughtfully transformed the property from an industrial structure into a living, breathing center for the arts—part home, part working studio, and part community gathering space. It was here that they raised their three children while building a meaningful artistic legacy rooted in both craftsmanship and community engagement.
Nancy Witt became a recognized and celebrated artist, named the 1994 Artist of the Year by the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center (WCA), with more than 50 solo exhibitions across the country. Her work—spanning painting and sculpture—along with her role in cultivating the Mill as a creative hub, was frequently featured in the *Richmond Times-Dispatch*. Today, her work is being considered for inclusion in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ private collection. Her connection to nearby Randolph-Macon College, which she attended beginning in 1948, further ties the Cross Mill to the cultural fabric of Ashland.
For decades, the Cross Mill operated as a place where art was not only created but shared—through exhibitions, gatherings, and an open exchange of ideas. After Nancy’s passing in 2009, her son continued to live and run the Cross Mill Gallery until 2024, when the decision was made to pass the stewardship of the Cross Mill to its next chapter.
Today, Cross Mill Arts Center carries forward that legacy with a deep respect for what was built here. The property remains home to original works by the Witt family, including canvas constructions, oil paintings, outdoor sculptures, vintage furnishings, and the tools and infrastructure that supported their daily creative lives. These elements are not simply artifacts—they are part of the living story of the Mill.
The current vision for Cross Mill is not to reinvent the space, but to continue its natural evolution. It remains intentionally unpolished in spirit—rooted in authenticity, creativity, and human connection. The goal is to preserve the character of the Mill while opening its doors to new voices and experiences.
Cross Mill Arts Center serves as a creative retreat and gathering place for artists, musicians, and the broader community. Through singer-songwriter performances, visual art exhibitions, small-scale events, and private retreats, the Mill continues to foster meaningful creative exchange. Looking ahead, the vision includes artist residencies, songwriting retreats, educational workshops, and expanded opportunities for regional artists to create and share their work.
At its core, Cross Mill is about stewardship—honoring the legacy of the Witt family while creating space for the next generation of creativity to take root. It is a place where history, art, music, and community come together in a setting that feels both timeless and alive.
